Each year, Chapman University's Pua'ikeana Club (the Hawaii club on campus) spends a weekend at Big Bear Ski Resort in Southern California. As a freshman at Chapman, I was a little hesitant about spending the weekend with so many upperclassmen. However, my time at Big Bear was far from a disappointment.
Getting to Big Bear was rough. We left the campus on Friday at 4pm, a primetime for traffic in California. By the time we reached the mountains, it was dark and lightly snowing. We all stayed in a house next to a lake which was frozen at the time.

I decided to wake up early next morning with some friends to catch the sunrise - it was totally worth it. First of all, I had no idea it snowed in southern California in February. As someone who grew up in Hawaii and only experienced snow twice in her life, my trip to Big Bear was definitely a highlight of my freshman year. It was no nice to take a break from the hustle and bustle of Orange County and immerse myself in nature. My time at Big Bear reminded me of my time back home, spending the whole day hiking and exploring the beauties of nature.
When I wasn't in the house or by the lake, I hit the slopes for some ski sessions. Last time I went skiing was in the 3rd grade, so I decided to start at the beginners level once again. I had so much fun weaving and gliding down the hills, and I only fell once! I cannot wait to come back to Big Bear with my Chapman friends!
